According to the most recent ABS report, nearly 1 in 10 households experienced one or more household crimes in the 2020-21 period. These reported ‘household crimes’ include anything from break-ins and attempted break-ins to property damage and motor vehicle theft[1].

Many Australian’s fall into the trap of being too complacent when it comes to securing their home and contents. New technologies constantly being released not only do more to secure your premises than outdated security systems, but can also provide a more user-friendly and convenient solution at a price point more cost effective than ever before. Here are three reasons why you should consider upgrading your security system in 2023.

1. Do more to deter criminal activity

While your old security alarms and cameras may still be working – if you haven’t upgraded them, or at least had them serviced in the last decade or so, you’re doing yourself a big disservice. From alarm sensors no longer performing to outdoor cameras providing unreliable &/or low resolution footage – there are many ways in which outdated security systems can compromise your home security. New technologies are constantly being released that – in addition to improving features, functionalities and usability – increase the ability to deter criminal activity. Active deterrence cameras are a good example of this. They are the latest in surveillance technology, that flash blue & red lights whilst playing an audible alarm when intrusion is detected.

2. Increased control and convenience

Modern security technologies provide many integration options for better usability. A great example of this is the Hikvision Hik-Connect Ecosystem. Customers are able to remotely manage and control their entire security solution – including cameras, intrusion alarms, intercom and access control system- from their phone or device. On the same app customers use to view their cameras, they can also arm/disarm their alarm system, be notified when someone is at the door and even open the door – from wherever they may be. Security solutions now act as a low-cost, introduction to the ‘connected home’.

3. Your lifestyle may have changed

Our lifestyles are constantly evolving. Since your initial security installation, you may be finding that you’re doing more travelling and spending longer periods away from home, or maybe you’ve done some renovations to your home that has resulted in some newly built access points being unprotected. Or if you are one of the ever-increasing number of Australians who prefer to do their shopping online, it may be as simple as considering a video doorbell/intercom solution to speak with delivery drivers and keep tabs on any deliveries made to your front door, from wherever you may be. It’s important to tailor your home security to keep it in line with your personal needs.
