Dahua ARC3808H Hybrid Alarm Panel Review: A Smart Upgrade for Older Alarm Systems

The Dahua ARC3808H is a hybrid alarm panel, which means it works with both wired and wireless sensors. It also works with the rest of Dahua’s range. You can control it from your phone and link it to compatible Dahua CCTV cameras. For many older alarm systems, it’s a handy upgrade that adds modern features without a full rewire.

Here’s a quick look at what the panel does, how self-monitoring works, and who it suits.

What is a hybrid alarm panel?

A hybrid alarm panel is the control box of your alarm system, and it can handle wired and wireless sensors at the same time. That’s useful when you’re upgrading. You can keep what already works and add wireless sensors where running new cable would be a hassle.

The ARC3808H has 8 inputs built in, and you can expand that to 128 input channels. It also has 4 built-in outputs, expandable to 128. Wired sensors can be up to 500 metres from the panel when the right twisted pair cable is used.

How does the ARC3808H work with the Dahua phone app?

You can run it from your phone using Dahua’s DMSS app. Arm it when you leave, disarm it when you get home and check its status any time, all without a monitoring contract. That makes it easy to self-monitor your alarm.

Here’s what you get:

  • Arm and disarm: By app, keypad, keyfob, card or a set schedule.
  • Multiple users: 32 app users, made up of 30 general users, 1 admin and 1 installer. Everyone in the family, or on your team, can have their own access.
  • Alerts: SMS and phone calls to up to 12 numbers.
  • Event history: A 5,000 event log, so you can look back at what happened and when.
  • Remote updates: Cloud and web firmware updates.

If you’d rather have someone else keep watch, the panel supports standard monitoring protocols (SIA and SoftGuard) and works with Permaconn. You can start with self-monitoring and add professional monitoring later.

Whichever way you go, use a strong, unique password and keep the firmware up to date. That goes for any alarm or camera you connect to the internet.

Can you see your cameras when the alarm goes off?

Yes, as long as the panel is linked to compatible Dahua CCTV cameras. The ARC3808H has 8 video channels and supports video linkage, so you can check camera footage when an alarm event happens. Instead of just knowing a door sensor tripped, you can see what’s going on and decide whether it’s a real problem.

If you already have a Dahua home CCTV system, the panel can sit alongside it. Planning a new system? Installing the alarm and cameras together keeps everything with one supplier and one installer.

What else can the ARC3808H do?

Plenty for a single panel. Here are the highlights:

  • Sensor capacity: Up to 120 wireless door sensors, 120 wireless motion (PIR) sensors and 120 wireless dual-tech sensors, depending on how many inputs are in use.
  • Other devices: Up to 16 wired keypads, 8 wireless sirens plus 1 local siren, 128 keyfobs and 16 expansion modules.
  • Areas: 32 areas, so you can split a property into zones such as upstairs and downstairs, or the shop and the office.
  • Tamper protection: Case and wall tamper detection, plus low battery detection.

How does it help when upgrading an old alarm?

It can make an upgrade quicker and less disruptive. Many older alarms use wired sensors, and the cabling behind your walls is often the hardest and most expensive part to replace. If your existing cabling is in good condition and suits the panel, a licensed installer can often reuse it. The old sensors can then be swapped for new ones.

There’s another good reason to upgrade. Older systems that report over a phone line may stop reporting once the NBN is connected. The ARC3808H connects by Ethernet cable and Wi-Fi, with optional mobile network and phone line connections, so you have more than one way to stay connected. It also meets Australian standards, so it’s suitable for installation here.

What happens in a power cut?

The panel runs on mains power and takes a 12V 7Ah backup battery. Standby time is up to 36 hours under test conditions, though your real result depends on the battery’s age, the connection type and how often the alarm is used. The battery isn’t included in the box, so your installer will supply it.

If the panel loses its network connection, it stores up to 50 alarm messages until it reconnects.

Who is the ARC3808H best for?

It suits homes and small to medium businesses with an older wired alarm that still has usable cabling. It’s especially handy if you already have Dahua cameras or plan to add them, and it works well where you need wired and wireless sensors mixed together.

If your property has no existing alarm cabling and can’t take new cable, a wireless-only system may be simpler. A site visit will tell you which suits.

Why professional installation matters

An alarm panel is only as good as the way it’s set up. A professional installer checks your existing cabling, places sensors where they’ll actually detect, links your cameras, sets up your app and monitoring, and makes sure your alerts work.

A quick note on privacy: camera linkage and user logs can involve recording footage, sometimes with audio, or monitoring staff. Audio recording and staff monitoring are generally more tightly regulated than video, and often need consent or notice. Rules differ by state and territory, so check your own requirements and get advice before recording audio or monitoring employees.
